Made from Swiss wood by us in our workshop.

What is end grain (or end grain)?
End grain cutting boards are made from end pieces of wood. It usually has a checkerboard pattern, which is the main feature by which you can tell it is an end-grain cutting board. This type of wooden cutting board is a bit more expensive, but some people consider it valuable because it is better for the knives. End grain cutting boards have a "self-healing factor" as the fibers close after being cut by the knife.

We use a food safe linseed oil varnish to treat our products.
There are many benefits to using flaxseed oil and these are just a few of them:

  • The oil enhances the color of the wood and brings out the grain, giving the wood a more textured look
  • It is non-toxic and therefore very environmentally friendly
  • Prevents wood from cracking as it prevents the wood from drying out
  • It helps cover up some scratches
  • The oil penetrates deep into the wood and forms a good protective barrier against the elements.

Ash (Fraxinus Excelsior), also known as European ash or common ash, is a wood that has been used in Switzerland for centuries.

You probably know the ash tree from the press about the ash dieback disease, which unfortunately could result in up to 85% of our ash forests disappearing in the next ten years. But the ash has much more to offer. We've rounded up 7 things you should know about this underrated wood.

What is ash wood?
Ash is a hardwood with a light cream coloration that can sometimes show olive or brown streaks. Ash trees can grow up to 35 m tall and live 400 years or more.

The specialty of this wood lies in the grain and colors ranging from cream to olive in the heartwood, knots are rare and the grain can be visually stunning.

Is ash readily available?
Ash trees are widespread and can be found throughout Switzerland, Europe, North America, Asia and even in the Arctic Circle! Ash thrives in cooler temperatures.

Although the native ash is currently threatened by ash dieback disease (Chalara Fraxinea), it can still be found despite declining populations.

Is ash affordable?
Ash is considered an affordable hardwood because the supply of ash is great and demand can be met easily, and some even consider ash undervalued compared to its peers.

Is ash strong?
Ash wood is known for its strength and is comparable to oak. This hardwood is extremely durable with a hardness of 1,320 lbf and is therefore even harder than teak or beech. Ash is able to absorb impact without chipping.

A great feature of ash is that it has strength and impact resistance comparable to oak, but is significantly lighter than oak.

What is ash used for?
Ash wood lends itself to steam bending and is commonly used to make handles for tools and sporting equipment, including hammers, spades, and baseball bats. Because of its attractive appearance, this hardwood is also often used in furniture.

Ash is often compared to oak and is a popular choice for flooring. Ash is also commonly used for doors, stairs, wooden frames and other interior furniture.

Ash wood can be stained without losing the grain and structure of the wood. Due to the coarse-pored structures, ash wood can take on any color evenly without stains. Ash wood is considered a wood that is easy to work with both hand tools and machines.

Is ash a good firewood?
Ash wood produces high heat and burns easily and cleanly, making it an excellent firewood. Ash is easy to cut and split, making it ideal for burning.

Can ash wood be used outdoors?
Unfortunately, ash wood is not recommended for outdoor use. Due to its low rot and insect resistance, this hardwood is not suitable for outdoor projects if left untreated. Oak is a good alternative for outdoor use as it is much more durable than ash.
